1954年早稲田大学理工学部応用化学科卒, 1959年東京工業大学大学院博士課程修了(工学博士), 1959年東京工業大学資源化学研究所助手，1960年米国カリフォルニア大学バークレー校博士研究員, 1962年ドイツマックスプランク石炭研究所博士研究員, 1967年東京工業大学資源化学研究所助教授, 1971年同教授. 1985年文部省科学官, 1988年資源化学研究所所長, 1990年東京工業大学名誉教授, 早稲田大学理工学研究科客員教授. 1992年日本ゼオン寄付講座担当客員教授．1987年日本化学会副会長, 1995年日本化学会会長, 1996年文部省学術審議会委員, 新技術事業団研究統括, 1969年高分子学会賞, 1986年日本化学会賞, 1989年東京都科学技術功労者, 1995年紫綬褒章.

研究内容
本研究室では，有機遷移金属錯体の基本的反応に関する研究を行うと共に，そこで得られた知見を基に触媒的有機合成反応を開発することを目指して研究を展開している．特に，パラジウム，ルテニウム，白金，ニッケル等の遷移金属をふくむ新しい金属錯体を合成し，その化学的性質を研究することによって，有機ハロゲン化物、酸無水物、不飽和アルコール等を利用するカルボニル化，ダブルカルボニル化等の新規合成反応を開発し，その反応機構を明らかにしてきた．
